In order to prevent laboratory workers from inhaling or ingesting some toxic, pathogenic or toxic chemicals and organisms, the laboratory should be well ventilated. In order to prevent the absorption of some vapors, gases and particulates (smoke, soot, dust and air suspension), the polluting substances must be removed by fume hoods, hoods or local ventilation.
